Michael Plaque

The life and contribution of local disability advocate Michael Merrett has been commemorated with a new plaque on Bridge Road.

Michael was a prominent figure in the City of Yarra. He was a longstanding member of Yarra Council's Disability Advisory Committee, a local Richmond resident and a tireless advocate for disability rights, particularly accessible public transport.

The unveiling of the plaque, by Public Transport Victoria, was attended by Michael's family, Yarra Mayor Cr Daniel Nguyen, Cr Amanda Stone and Cr Jackie Fristacky, Yarra Trams CEO Nicolas Gindt and Public Transport Victoria CEO Jeroen Weimar.

Michael's resolute effort to improve the accessibility of public transport for all community members focused on creating accessible tram stops. Because of Michael's hard work there are now accessible tram stops on Bridge Road, Victoria Street and more recently, Nicholson Street.

Michael's other advocacy work for public transport included fighting for accessible Myki cards.

The new plaque, unveiled on Friday 26 October, recognises Michael's commitment to creating an inclusive, just and fair society, and the lasting impact this will have for advancing disability rights in Australia.
