Smith Street and Queens Parade 86 tram line replacement works

Monday 21 May 2018

A tram is travelling down a busy street in the rain
If you’re travelling on Queens Parade or Smith Street or catch the 86 tram between 10pm Friday 1 June and 5am Tuesday 5 June, your commute will be affected by works on the 86 tram tracks.

Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria are conducting these works. The tracks are 28 years old and must be renewed so trams can continue to use them. In addition the overhead wires will be replaced. The replacement will also lead to a smoother road for both cyclists and tram passengers.

There will be several limits on travel along Smith Street and Queens Parade to allow these works to go ahead. Unless otherwise noted, these restrictions will be in force between 10pm Friday 1 June and 5am Tuesday 5 June.

• The city-bound lane on Queens Parade will be closed beginning at midnight Saturday 2 June.
• On the morning of Monday 4 June, Queens Parade will have one lane open heading towards the city.
• During this time some of the Queens Parade lanes out of the city may be shut.
• There will be reduced parking on Smith Street between Queens Parade and Council Street.
• Smith Street will be closed between Queens Parade and Alexandra Parade.
• The 86 tram route will run as 86a with buses replacing trams between Stop 10 Parliament Station and Stop 25 Clifton Hill. Closer to the works, Yarra Trams' service changes page will have the changes to the timetable.
• You may experience delays on Alexandra Parade at night as lanes will be closed while Melbourne Water replaces the drain deck underneath the Smith Street/Alexandra Parade intersection.

The works will run for 24 hours a day during 10pm Friday 1 June to 5am Tuesday 5 June. There will be noise and dust, however Yarra Trams will restrict the loudest works from 6am to 10pm.
