In Yarra we’re lucky to have a rich Aboriginal history and culture and we deeply value the contribution that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have made to the area.
If you’re interested in learning more about Aboriginal history and culture in Yarra, these are just some suggestions on how you can explore or support the community:
Things you can do on January 26
- Watch this Welcome to Country video featuring Uncle Colin Hunter:
- Attend the Share the Spirit Festival at Treasury Gardens on January 26, featuring musicians who showcase the true diversity of Aboriginal performers.
- Attend the Invasion Day/Survival Day March in the Melbourne CBD.
- Follow Change the Date Yarra Facebook page.
- Support the #ChangeTheDate campaign.
Things you can do anytime
- Watch the Mayor’s Aboriginal Yarra video and learn about some of Fitzroy’s cultural highlights:
- Visit the Aboriginal History of Yarra website, which highlights some key events in Yarra’s history and has a map of significant sites – a great resource to help you take your own self-guided tour of Aboriginal Fitzroy!
- Attend the Smith Street Dreaming Festival, which usually takes place in July every year in Smith Street, Collingwood.
- Check out the Yarra Libraries’ events calendar for some of their Aboriginal cultural events and programs.
- Visit Melbourne Museum’s Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre where you can discover Aboriginal history and culture through objects, images and stories which explore their connection to the land.
