Extreme weather and our drainage system

Storm clouds approaching on the horizon of Edinburgh Gardens

There are forecasts for large storms, with possibly very heavy rain this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

We are preparing for these storms by inspecting key drainage infrastructure and putting on extra crews.

Our roads are likely to fill with water when there is very heavy rain. Our roads and laneways form part of Yarra's drainage system, along with drainage pits, grates, pipes and rain gardens. The roads are designed to hold the flowing stormwater when there is lots of rain over a short amount of time.

In large rainfall, such as what is forecast for this weekend, stormwater will likely fill the road and sit on the road whilst it is raining and for a short period after the rainfall has stopped. The stormwater will slowly drain away overtime after the rain has stopped. This happens because a lot of water is trying to get in to the pipes at the same time, a bit like a stormwater traffic jam.

Please be extra careful on the roads and laneways at this time.

Please pay attention to all warnings and never play in drains or drive in flood waters.
