AFL Richmond Tigers projection on Richmond Town Hall

We’re joining our community in a roar of support for the Tigers who will star in Saturday’s AFL Grand Final.

Richmond, the heart of Tigerland, is buzzing with excitement, and we expect it to be a popular spot for celebrations over the weekend.

Here are a few things to keep in mind to when planning your celebrations.

Take public transport

If you’re lucky enough to be going to the game on Saturday, or if you’re planning on heading into the area to soak up the atmosphere over the weekend, please leave the car at home and catch public transport.

Car parking is extremely limited.

  • There will be no general car parking available at the MCG/Yarra Park
  • There is no parking at Punt Road Oval
  • On-street parking in Richmond is limited. Our parking officers will be enforcing parking restrictions as usual, so don’t take the risk.

There are plenty of public transport options and extra train and tram services.

The free tram zone has also been extended to the MCG from Wednesday 27 September to Saturday 30 September.

To plan your journey, visit the Public Transport Victoria website.

Swan Street will remain open

Swan Street in Richmond will remain open to traffic and trams over the finals weekend.

There will be no on-street parking available on Swan Street on Saturday.

Plan where you’ll watch the game

There are a number of live sites where the game will play on the big screen, including:

There are expected to be big crowds watching the game at venues on Swan Street and Bridge Road, but don’t forget there are lots of great places to watch in other parts of Yarra, including Victoria Street in Richmond, and venues in nearby Fitzroy and Collingwood.

Keeping Tigerland tidy

It’s likely to be a big weekend in Richmond, and Council is arranging extra bins, portaloos, street sweeps and cleaning crews to make sure our streets stay tidy.

If you notice anything that needs our attention, please call our customer service line on 9205 5555. We’ll respond as soon as possible.

Celebrating with our community

Over the past few weeks we have been working closely with the Richmond Football Club show our support for the Tigers.

Richmond Town Hall is getting in to the spirit, with massive banners depicting Tigers’ heroes Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Alex Rance and Jack Riewoldt on loan from the club.

On Wednesday night, the town hall was lit up in yellow and black with special Tigers projections, thanks to the Bridge Road Traders Association. The projections will run until Sunday.

We’re also supporting our local businesses. We’ve distributed 150 decoration packs to traders in Bridge Road, Swan, Church and Victoria streets, to help them show their colours.

GO TIGES!
