New North Fitzroy library and community facility named

Thursday 04 August 2016

The soon-to-be completed library and community hub in North Fitzroy has been officially named ‘Bargoonga Nganjin, North Fitzroy Library’.

Yarra City Council Mayor, Cr Roberto Colanzi said the name pays tribute to Yarra’s Traditional Owners, the Wurundjeri.

“Bargoonga Nganjin means ‘Gather Everybody’ in Woiwurrung, the language of the Wurundjeri people, which is a fitting sentiment for this highly-anticipated library and community facility.

“It is a true reflection of the diverse and inclusive character of our City, that a brand new, state-of-the-art community facility be named in this way.

“We will install an audio display panel at the entrance of the building to assist visitors on the proper pronunciation of ‘Bargoonga Nganjin’. Interpretive signage will also explain the relevance of the name and the cultural importance of the Woiwurrung language to Wurundjeri people.

“The name acknowledges Council’s commitment to promoting Aboriginal culture and deepening people's understanding of Aboriginal people, their language and history, as outlined in Yarra’s Aboriginal Partnership Plan 2015–2018.”

“It was put forward by the Wurundjeri Tribe Land and Compensation Cultural Heritage Council Incorporated. I especially thank the Council for their recommendation and am proud that the library and community facility acknowledges and celebrates their language,” Cr Colanzi said.

The Bargoonga Nganjin, North Fitzroy Library building is expected to be completed in early 2017. As well as a library, it will also incorporate a maternal and child health centre, customer service area, seminar rooms, community meeting, function rooms and a roof top garden.
