Yarra City Council tonight unanimously resolved to call on Officers to prepare an alternate Budget for 2017-18 that does not include a new waste service charge.
Yarra Mayor, Cr Amanda Stone, who moved the motion, said this was a strong indication that Council was listening to its community and was prepared to consider alternative options for its budget which do not include a waste service charge.
The resolution comes ahead of tomorrow night’s special council meeting at which Councillors are due to hear verbal submissions from the community. This meeting is part of the statutory consultation process required by Council for the consideration of Yarra’s council plan and budget as advertised.
Cr Stone said the motion was not intended to pre-empt any decision by Council, which is still scheduled to consider the draft council plan, budget and long term financial strategy at an Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 6 June 2017 at 7pm at Richmond Town Hall.
“We need to follow the statutory process, so won’t be making a decision until 6 June. However given the overwhelming feedback we have received to date, this motion is intended to indicate to submitters that we are listening, and that we are prepared to consider all options for our 2017-18 budget.
“I want to thank all submitters and people who have given us feedback.”
The motion was seconded by Cr Danae Bosler and endorsed unanimously.
