To Be Gazed Upon is an exhibition by Lauren Morehouse. The exhibition shows large crochet sculptures with clear feminine bodily traits.

The physicality of the sculptures is feminine and the artist uses yarn to create a sense of comfort, but the final forms can be uncomfortable to look at. Imperfections read as rolls or sagging or bulges.

To Be Gazed Upon attempts to physically manifest the feeling of being the object of the gaze, giving this sculptural body strength, and pride, and defiance in the way it abstractly and abjectly portrays the feminine form. The work is self aware, knowing how it is perceived but not shrinking away. Instead it takes up space and forces you to be within its presence.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 26th of November and is on show until Sunday 6th of December.

BlackCat gallery is located at 95 Johnston Street, Collingwood.
