This is me

Sunday 08 March 2020

Challenging sexist narratives of female beauty and conformity on International Women’s Day 2020.

This unique fashion show celebrates all women and the diversity of their bodies and stories. ‘This Is Me’ brings together 30 women of a range of body types with visible and hidden disabilities, ethnic backgrounds, survivors of family violence, gender identifications and ages. They will model gorgeous clothes, share their journeys and experiences – both the dark and the light – laugh, strut, and above all challenge the damaging and rigid standards of beauty and femininity that society imposes on women.

Falling during Melbourne Fashion Week, the event creates a space for women who are generally not given a platform nor celebrated by designers. The models will wear both new and pre-loved clothing, as well as designs from Australian based designers.

In addition to the fashion show, ‘This Is Me’ will feature a special performance by ‘All Together Now’s’ Kattimoni Dawn, and social enterprise stalls selling wares that support women both locally and globally.

All profits will be directed to two organisations that support women and girls:

  • The Butterfly Foundation: which supports girls and women with eating disorders and body dysmorphia, and
  • Foothills Care: which supports survivors of family violence.

The event is led by a volunteer committee of passionate women, and all models have choice and control over every aspect of how they are represented.
