Emerge in Yarra 2019

Friday 18 October 2019 - Saturday 19 October 2019

Arts | Music | Discourse. Inspired and curated by artists who challenge the mainstream daily.

Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Emerge in Yarra is celebrating 15 years by exploring new futures and new terrain, with a multilayered program of events presented at Schoolhouse Studios, Melba Spiegeltent and Sawtooth Studio from 18-19 October 2019.

Since its inception in 2004, the festival has taken many forms, at many venues across the City of Yarra, always with the purpose of showcasing artistic & cultural diversity to the wider public. Reflecting on cultural shifts in the arts landscape, Emerge in Yarra 2019 will instead be a series of dynamic events with a focus on CALD and PoC artists creating spaces to meet, generate new conversations and share their incredible work.

Schoolhouse Studios will host On Power, a series of conversation events programmed by Melbourne writer, curator and artist, Andy Butler. Are we in the middle of a cultural shift? Everyone’s talking about inclusion, and cultural institutions are scrambling to look more relevant. People from the outside are being put in the centre. What does our current moment mean when you’re a culturally diverse artist, or somehow from the “outside”?

The Melba Spiegeltent will host two not-to-be-missed live music events; Yeo’s Recovery Channel album preview party a genre bending production of contemporary R&B, pop and electronica. And VIBE!, an audio-visual feast of some of the freshest new generation hip hop and soul talents featuring Pookie, Good Luck Omen and the Heard Instinct Collective.
