Play On Series Five joins the dots between the world’s oldest living culture and the beating heart of Melbourne today, with revelatory classical performances alongside cosmic DJ sets in a lineup of Australia’s most revered artists. Play On returns for its fifth series over three consecutive Friday nights in October and November. Each of the shows in the series features the project’s signature format: a set of classical chamber music followed by a set by an electronic musician / DJ. See Australia’s most respected classical musicians performing live then shift gears and hit the dancefloor.

Play On is proud to present the world premiere of its latest commission, Madonna, an electro-acoustic work by Melbourne composer Jeanette Little, host of classical / experimental show Slime on cult online radio station NTS.

Presented alongside works by Xenakis, Scriabin and Messiaen, the program will be brought to life by two of Australia’s most respected young musicians, virtuosic pianist Peter de Jager and multi-award winning percussive artist Matthias Schack-Arnott.

To close the series, Play On is thrilled to present acclaimed didgeridoo player William Barton. With a practice that blends the oldest living culture in the world with Europe’s rich classical music tradition, Barton’s work has expanded the horizons of the didgeridoo and the culture and landscape that it represents. Celebrated as a performer, composer and improviser, he has played with some of the world’s leading classical ensembles including the London and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, delivering his prodigious musicality and the quiet conviction of his Kalkadunga heritage to audiences around the world. For this special performance Barton presents a selection of his own compositions for didgeridoo and string quartet. A unique and powerful Australian voice in contemporary classical music, Play On is delighted to showcase this extraordinary musician.

This event has received a City of Yarra Small Project Grant.
