Melbourne-based Japanese artist Kyoko Imazu graduated in fine arts from RMIT and has exhibited widely in Melbourne.

This exhibition, especially made for the light boxes of the Carlton Library, explores some of the fantastical imagery and animals that are often found in Kyoko’s work.

Some of Imazu’s earliest memories are of drawing animals and other imaginary creatures. Japanese folktales are traditionally populated with ‘Yōkai’―strange animals, monsters and objects with souls as well as formless, natural phenomena like wind and thunder. Imazu was convinced—and very scared—that there were Yōkai and other creatures lurking close by or hiding in dark corners of the house. In her mind, they were as real as dogs or cats.

The Light Box Program is one of a number of public art initiatives whereby Council brings art into the everyday; we curate a changing exhibition program at Fitzroy, Carlton and Richmond libraries. We also have an exciting program at Council’s newest facility: Bargoonga Nganjin
