Fringe Furniture

Thursday 14 September 2017 - Sunday 01 October 2017

From the reassuringly practical to the confusingly obtuse, Fringe Furniture has seen it all.

For more than 30 years, Fringe Furniture has been a core part of Melbourne Fringe, a celebration of cultural democracy and art for everyone. This year will be no different: a boundary-pushing showcase of cutting-edge industrial design, this is no Ikea showroom (though you might still find something comfy to sit on).

Design brings us together, around tables or on couches, in love-seats and back-seats and those weird egg-seats; it lights up our public spaces, stores our conversation-starters and displays our stories. This year, Fringe Furniture is all grown up, and for its 31st Birthday, we’ve asked artists to consider how the practical objects we use every day (and likely take for granted) can spark conversation, a two-way conversation, one that calls you to step out of the echo chamber of like-minded folk and shift your perspective. Bet you never thought a chair could do that, right?

Come ready to buy, or ready to re-think; above all, expect the unexpected. We guarantee you’ll have something to say about this.
