Play On
Friday 01 September 2017 - Friday 15 September 2017
Play On is proud to announce series three: 1, 8 and 15 September 2017 at the Collingwood Contemporary Arts Precinct, the inner North’s emerging hub of creative activity.
Taking over the partially derelict former technical school for the first three Fridays in September with its signature classical meets electronic nights, Play On Series Three will showcase some of Australia’s most respected classical musicians performing alongside the country’s finest electronic selectors.
The series features repertoire from Arvo Pärt to Australian composer Richard Meale, before closing with Felix Mendelssohn’s ecstatic 1825 Octet. For the opening night on 1 September young Melbourne pianist Tristan Lee will lead his piano trio – piano, violin and cello, before underground heavyweight Harold plays the second set. The following two shows see Play On favourite and Australian treasure Kristian Winther lead the Play On Collective. On 8 September Nite Fleit spins her distinctive mix of industrial techno, acid and house, and on 15 September Melbourne institution Whiskey Houston closes the series.
The Play On concept was born in 2016, with its first series of shows held in November that year in an underground car park. After years thinking about the way both classical and electronic music was often only accessible to niche audiences, Play On’s founders came together to create a new music night that would showcase classical music in its true authenticity, outside of the confines of the concert hall, and act as a point of entry for a new generation of classical music appreciators.
This project is supported by the City of Yarra through the Small Project Grants
