Over 10 years ago, before projection art became a global phenomenon, a small neighbourhood event began in Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.

Since then, in the longest darkest nights of every Melbourne winter, the Gertrude Street Projection Festival has brought people out to the street to see video projections illuminating buildings, laneways, sidewalks and parks, combined with music and performance art.

Unfurling Futures, the curatorial theme for the 10th Anniversary of the Gertrude Street Projection Festival is an invitation to artists to create glimpses for and of the future.

For 10 days over winter, participating artists are asked to create works which imagine Gertrude Street as a time capsule that explores the social, political and environmental epoch of our times. Drawing on the past, and grounded in the present while projecting into the future, the 2017 Festival invites artists to contribute to an immersive, interactive and enchanting experience that ignites our collective social imaginary to explore the possibilities of multiple futures… there are no limits as we unfurl the future.

The Gertrude Street Projection Festival is more than just bright colours on buildings, and challenges viewers to see not just the street anew, but life and our collective experience in a different light.
