Councillor Claudia Nguyen

Councillor Claudia Nguyen

About

Born and raised in Yarra, Claudia Nguyen is an independent councillor of Vietnamese Heritage.

She comes from an extended family of refugees, who came to Australia after fleeing the Vietnam War. Claudia was born in Australia with her family settling in Yarra’s housing estates when they arrived and this is where Claudia lived when she was young.

Claudia is incredibly proud of her Vietnamese Heritage and is grateful for the opportunities moving to Australia has given her family.

Her parents instilled in her the importance of giving back which has led her to fundraise and advocate for refugees, volunteer her time to encourage young women to pursue education opportunities in science and tech (STEM), and organise events for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

As well as representing Yarra, Claudia has a strong interest in youth empowerment, celebrating LGBTQIA+ communities, and advocating for vulnerable people living within our community.

Claudia’s passion and commitment to her local community has led her to hold numerous executive committee roles with organisations with an interest in STEM, sport, young people and CALD communities.

Claudia graduated from Melbourne University with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Engineering. She has worked as a consultant in the private industry and most recently as a Senior Policy Officer in the public sector.

Claudia believes her community advocacy, leadership, and policy experience will help her to continue to drive positive outcomes for future generations and transform Yarra into a smart and innovative city.

Claudia was Yarra’s Deputy Mayor in 2020-2021 and Mayor in 2022-2023.
