Yarra City Council welcomes the Victorian Government’s announcement today that it will contribute $200,000 to fund a new all-weather synthetic futsal court on the Atherton Reserve in Fitzroy.  Atherton Reserve is Fitzroy’s largest open space and highly valued by the whole community. Fitzroy is one of Yarra’s fasted growing populations.

Council welcomes the Victorian Government announcement it will continue to fund two of Yarra’s most important community and business supports services.

This is the community’s chance to have a say on our draft Domestic Animal Management Plan 2026-29, which helps us manage dogs and cats in our city.

Golden Square Bicentennial Park, a small reserve in the heart of the historically significant Golden Square precinct in Burnley, will be upgraded with new play equipment and landscaping after Yarra City Council last night approved the Final Concept Design.“Locals told us that they wanted the new playground to have more play options for more ages and abilities, and more shade and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” said City of Yarra Mayor, Stephen Jolly.The design of the new playground improves accessibility, includes more play options for more ages and abilities, as well as providing better shade with the addition of nine mature trees.

At Tuesday night’s Council Meeting, Council resolved to:Progress the Coppin Street Bicycle Corridor Study to Stage 2, including engagement with the community during 2025/26.Adopted for implementation the LGBTIQA+ Heritage Study that identifies places of historical importance to the LGBTIQA+ community.Determined not to return the Captain Cook Memorial to Fitzroy’s Edinburgh Gardens, citing the Memorial’s condition, structural integrity and ongoing costs associated with vandalism.Other agenda items and more details about the above items can be viewed in the Council Meeting minutes, available online from Friday 16 May.

A new public open space in Cremorne has opened this week, thanks to a collaboration between Council and the Kangan Institute.Located in front of the heritage listed State School building at 85 Cremorne Street, this new public open space offering features native greenery with seasonal colours, bespoke art- work and seating.The CEO of Kangan Institute, Sally Curtain, said “the Institute welcomes the opportunity to work with Yarra City Council to create a small open space haven for the community in the heart of Cremorne”.City of Yarra Mayor, Cr Stephen Jolly, said “this offering will provide some much-needed open space for residents and visitors while Council actively pursues opportunities for more permanent open space in Cremorne”.We encourage the community to take advantage of the space.
