Infectious diseases - Public Health programs
Program information
The aim of the Public Health Unit is to minimise the incidence or spread of infectious diseases through the administration and enforcement of the relevant provisions of the Health Act 1958 and to reduce the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases in the community.
- The Unit registers and inspects all premises conducting skin penetration activities such as tattooists, body piercers, ear piercers and electrolysis clinics in addition to beauty parlours and hairdressers. The purpose of this registration is to prevent the spread of infectious diseases by regular inspection (which checks correct cleaning, sterilisation and operator procedure), proprietor education and information transfer.
- Motels, boarding houses and accommodation facilities also require registration. The purpose of this registration is to allow routine inspection of premises to monitor clean, hygienic, uncrowded accommodation. (private dwellings where not more than 5 people in addition to family members rent rooms do not require registration)
- Water samples are taken from public pools and spas 4 times a year for microbiological and chemical analysis.
- Customer requests relating to premise cleanliness, procedure, or control of infectious disease are investigated by the Unit.
- Primary school children are checked biannually for head lice. Advice and lotion is given to parents / carers to treat confirmed cases.
- An infant and school immunisation program is conducted in the municipality.
