Desexing and Microchipping

Getting your pet desexed and microchipped is part of being a responsible pet owner. If you do not intend to breed your pet, you should get it desexed. Desexing your pet can help reduce unwanted stray animal populations.

Now compulsory, microchipping is a great way to ensure your pet can be easily identifiable if they get lost.

Desexing
Contact your local vet for this procedure. Council offers cheaper registration fees if your pet is desexed.

Before desexing your pet you will need to show proof to your vet that dog or cat has been vaccinated. You should therefore ensure that your pet is vaccinated at the earliest opportunity.

Council also offers desexing vouchers to people who have:

The Desexing Voucher can only be obtained in person at the Richmond Town Hall and is valid for one month.

Some conditions of the desexing voucher:

When applying for a desexing voucher you must provide the following information:

Microchipping
You can have your pet permanently identified by a microchip implant, which can be electronically scanned. Contact your local vet for this procedure.

Microchipping is not a substitute for Council registration but it a great way to ensure your pet can always be found no matter what municipality it ends up in. You are still legally required to register your pet annually with Council.
