Domestic Animal Business Registration

What is a Domestic Animal Business?
Any business which makes a profit from selling pets, boarding pets or training pets is a Domestic Animal Business.  Therefore the following places would need to register their business with Council as a Domestic Animal Business:

These businesses must comply with the requirements of the relevant Codes of Practice.  These Codes of Practice have been made by the State Government and sets out guidelines on how these businesses must operate.  Codes of Practice can be found on the Department of Primary Industries website –

Why register?
Under the Domestic (Feral & Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 it is a requirement that all domestic animal businesses are registered with Council.  These include veterinary clinics that board cats and/or dogs, dog training companies, pet shops, etc.

The registration is for 12 months and is renewable on 9 April each year.

The definition of a domestic animal business is:

• An animal shelter, Council pound or pet shop;
• An enterprise which is run for profit that undertakes the breeding of dogs or cats; or
• An enterprise which is run for profit that undertakes rearing, training or boarding of dogs or cats

How much does it cost?
The cost of registration is $259.00 (fee subject to change annually).
