Youth Mentoring

Adolescence is a challenging and complex developmental life stage. During this period, a young person must negotiate several changes and challenges, including puberty, transitioning from primary to secondary school and developing independence. Some young people are particularly vulnerable during this time due to factors such as socio-economic disadvantage and without appropriate support may experience great difficulty in managing its demands.

Youth mentoring is a well-established strategy to support disadvantaged and vulnerable young people through this time.  In the youth mentoring relationship, mentees are supported to gain a trusted, caring relationship with a mentor, share new experiences, have fun, learn and grow.

Benefits of youth mentoring for mentees include:

  • An opportunity to develop social skills, confidence, motivation and self-esteem
  • Improvements in school attendance and academic outcomes
  • Decrease in the likelihood of early school leaving, drug and alcohol abuse and crime

Benefits of youth mentoring for mentors include:

  • The opportunity to develop a caring and trusting relationship with a mentee and make a positive difference
  • A chance to support the local community
  • Access to training, information, resources and ongoing support

There are several youth mentoring programs currently operating across the City of Yarra.  The focus of the programs and groups of young people the program work with vary and outlined in the following document S:\YSMY - Youth Services\Projects\Yarra Youth mentoring\Youth mentoring in Yarra 2015 table.docx
