Restricted access to Young and Cecil streets due to safety of Fitzroy Pool wall
27 November 2013
Council has restricted access to Young and Cecil streets (bounding Fitzroy Pool) due to safety concerns about the pool’s brick boundary wall.
On Tuesday afternoon, barricades were installed along the streets to restrict vehicles from entering Young Street (between Cecil Street and Alexandra Parade) and to block the footpath and parking spaces adjacent to the wall on Cecil Street.
Council’s Municipal Building Surveyor investigated the site yesterday morning following an engineering assessment that found the wall was unsafe because it had a slight lean towards the street.
The assessment was part of a regular maintenance program for the wall.
Council is currently investigating options to secure the wall, which could include strengthening the wall or removing it entirely.
Council understands the wall has some heritage value and is mindful of the importance of finding a solution that protects both heritage and public safety.
The Fitzroy Pool remains open, as there is no risk to pool patrons. Barricades have been installed on the pool concourse to ensure there is a safe distance between the wall and patrons.
For further information, contact Dan Curlis, Municipal Building Surveyor, on 9205 5353.

Yarra Leisure wins ARV award for most innovative program
On Friday 14 June, Yarra Leisure’s African Children’s Swim Program was the recipient of the Aquatics & Recreation Victoria (ARV) award for most innovation program.
The African Children’s Swimming Program is a ‘social integration’ program committed to creating confident swimmers and designed to offer children aged between 4 to 12 years old the opportunity to learn vital swimming and water safety skills. For six to twelve months children are able to benefit from the skill development opportunities offered in the program. After this time participants and families are encouraged to branch out from the program and engage in the regular lessons offered through the Yarra Leisure Swim School. The program targets newly arrived and refugee immigrants to Australia from Africa who live within the inner-eastern metropolitan area of Melbourne.
The ARV award recognises innovative facility based community recreation programs using aquatic or land based activities that are enhancing the wellbeing of the local community. The award highlights increased opportunities for participation and supports behavioural change to a healthier lifestyle, or other health and social benefits.
Yarra Leisure is extremely proud to have received this award and will continue to develop and promote this program for sustained success.

Yarra Leisure delivers world-class service
The behind-the-scenes processes that keep Yarra’s leisure centres and the Burnley Golf Course running from day-to-day have achieved top marks as part of an external audit.
For the fifth year in a row, Yarra Leisure has achieved certification to the Australian Standard for quality management (AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008). The certification is awarded by auditors accredited by the International Standards Organisation (ISO), a body that develops standards for organisations around the world.
To achieve the certification, an auditor visited Yarra’s three leisure centres and the Burnley Golf Course over several days. The auditor looked at how the centres meet the needs of members, including how customer feedback is managed, whether staff training is up to date, and what processes are in place to ensure that gym and pool areas are kept clean and safe. Yarra Leisure was also required to demonstrate systems and processes that ensure consistently high levels of customer service.
Yarra Leisure aims to maintain its certification and will undergo an assessment each year to ensure its members continue to receive world-class service.
