Fitzroy toddler pool reopening
Fitzroy Swimming Pools’ toddler pool reopens on Saturday 8 October. We look forward to having our younger pool buddies back with us. Term 4 swimming lessons also kick off at Fitzroy this Saturday.
Please remember the supervision requirements across our centres, detailed below.
Watch Around Water
We follow the Watch Around Water policy across our facilities. The Watch Around Water program is the combined effort of Aquatics & Recreation Victoria, Life Saving Victoria and Play it Safe by the Water. The program ensures parents and children always have a safe and enjoyable time around water.
Parent with child under 5 years
Supervising adults must be in the water at all times, within arm’s reach of the child. Each supervising adult may only supervise up to a maximum of three children.
Parent with child 5 - 9 years
The parent/guardian must position himself or herself within the water or poolside so as to have a clear view of the child with no physical or structural barriers between them and the child, and be prepared to enter the water.
Parent with child 10 - 15 years
Parents must use their knowledge of the child’s swimming ability to determine accompaniment required.
For more information regarding supervision requirements please visit http://www.yarracity.vic.gov.au/services/Yarra-Leisure/Aquatics/Watch-Around-Water/or call Fitzroy on 9205 5180.
Aqua group fitness lane allocation
Lane allocation review
In response to substantial customer feedback, during July and August we reviewed Aqua group exercise lane allocations. Our changes aim to:
- Create certainty for participants and staff regarding Aqua group fitness and Learn to Swim lane allocation.
- Minimise the potential for Learn to Swim and Aqua group fitness participants to impact one another.
The most significant outcome is the introduction of seasonal lane allocation for some aqua classes, replacing the practice of allocating lanes based on daily attendance.
As of 1 October 2016, seasonal lane allocation for Aqua group fitness classes will apply. Yarra Leisure will review lane allocation and communicate with attendees in September and May each year.
We reviewed attendance for every Aqua group exercise class for the 2015-16 financial year. Our data shows an additional lane is warranted in the peak season period of October to May on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The evidence did not support additional lane allocation on peak season weekends, or any day in the off season of June to September.
Seasonal changes to lane allocation apply to the 9:15am Aqua group exercise classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All other Aqua group exercise allocations are per existing arrangements. Please see the attached timetable below.
Unless the Duty Manager determines a substantial operational matter requires addressing on the day, it is intended that these new lane allocations are fixed.
We appreciate the cooperation of all pool users while we implement changes. We ask all pool users keep a safe and respectful distance from other activities.
For lap swimmers, our weekly published lane availability will reflect these seasonal changes to aqua group fitness.
For further information please contact, Marty Moran – Health and Fitness Coordinator, via email at YarraLeisure@yarracity.vic.gov.au

Yarra Leisure wins the inaugural ARV Business Excellence Award
After a particularly productive 2015, the Yarra Leisure team were recognised for their efforts at the 2016 ARV (Aquatics and Recreational Victoria) Awards last Friday night, receiving the inaugural Business Excellence Award.
The Yarra Leisure team were recognised for many things, and the massive task of an intensive internal review analysing every aspect of operations across the three leisure centres and Burnley Golf Course, was just one of them. The whole process took an entire year, and left no stone unturned. The review resulted in a number of recommendations that the Leisure team have already started addressing and acting upon; something that will continue throughout 2016 and beyond.
On top of the review, Yarra Leisure adopted new staff structures, introduced a board of management style team, achieved LSV (Life Saving Victoria) platinum pool status for all three leisure facilities, upgraded gym facilities and equipment at two out of three centres (with Richmond Recreation to follow), underwent a rebrand, and much more. It’s fair to say then that 2015 was a demanding one for the Yarra Leisure team, and all are thrilled with the recognition from ARV.
However, there is no time to waste on self-congratulation; because with considerable capital works and upgrades both underway and on the horizon, 2016 is fast shaping up to be just as busy as last year.
