Yarra’s respite care services offer both in-home and out-of-home services to give carers a break from their caring role.
Generally, the respite care service will be provided at a regular, planned time.
We will discuss respite care options with you and reach agreement on providing the service either in your home or out of your home. The aim of the service is to provide the carer with a suitable break while at the same time engaging the family member in a purposeful activity, such as therapy practice, homework, recreation or other activities that increase independence and keep people connected to the community.
We encourage you to discuss your needs with us, including the length of respite care and the type of care that will suit your circumstances.
Council offers respite services that are centre-based or provided at home. These sessions usually occur at a pre-arranged time, although they can sometimes be arranged on an ad hoc or emergency basis.
Council will discuss your respite care needs with you, including the length of respite care and the type of care that will suit your circumstances.
Respite care for children
Respite care is available to support families with a child or children with a disability.
To receive the service, an assessment would be undertaken by an assessment officer. The services provided may include:
- Respite care within the family home
- Personal care
- Independence/skills promotion
- Recreation and outings
- School holiday support
To access Council’s respite service, you will need to be assessed as eligible by an Assessment Officer.
- When the referral is accepted we will contact you to arrange a visit by one of Council’s Assessment Officers, to discuss your needs and the services available.
- If your situation is urgent, we can organise services very quickly. If not, there may be a wait of several weeks before services start.
- A low fee will be charged and this will be discussed with you at the time of assessment.
