Parking sensors in Yarra

Sensor technology is a more accurate and consistent way to manage parking in Yarra by encouraging drivers to comply with restrictions.

You can view a map of the parking sensor locations here.  Please note the green indicates the streets where the sensors are.  You can zoom in on the map to see the specific suburbs and street names.

Why are we introducing parking sensors?

Sensors support efficient turnover of parking spaces and helps on street parking be more readily available for residents, businesses, shoppers and visitors.  It allows us to manage the limited parking spaces on our streets in a fair and equitable way for everyone.

What is an in ground sensor and how do they work?

The in ground sensor is a small electronic device that is installed underneath the parking bay to detect and record the time a vehicle arrives and departs the bay. The sensor records vehicle arrival time and if the vehicle overstays the maximum time permitted in a bay.  Parking officers are alerted of overstay vehicles in the area they are working in and can determine if an offence has occurred.

 How accurate are parking sensors?

Our sensors are extremely accurate.   Each day an automatic health check is processed to ensure the sensor is working correctly.  Sensors record the exact time that a vehicle enters and exits a parking bay.  Sensor technology has been successfully operating in Yarra since the initial installation in March 2017.

Are you working where the parking sensors are located?

If you are opening the road for service connections within the parking bay, the parking sensors must be removed prior to works. Please find application form to remove sensors  here.
