The Collingwood Leisure Centre’s gymnasium will reopen tomorrow (Wednesday 26 August), but the pool will remain closed until Monday 7 September as repair works are undertaken on its roof.
Yarra City Council closed the Centre on Thursday 20 August after Council staff became aware of a damaged timber roof truss. The truss is part of the support system for one of the Centre’s main roof beams.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the safety of patrons was paramount, and Council had relied on the advice of experienced structural engineers in deciding on the way forward.
“We are pleased structural engineers have advised that it is now safe to reopen the Centre’s popular gymnasium,” Cr Stone said.
“It is unfortunate that the pool area will be closed for the next fortnight but we need to provide enough time to undertake any reinforcing works deemed necessary,” she said.
“This roof is more than 30 years old, and is to be replaced as part of the $6.3 million expansion of the Centre, which will hopefully get underway early next year.
“In the meantime, Council has been seeking regular engineering reports on the roof, and the most recent advice in March 2009 was that it was structurally sound but should continue to be monitored.
“It was our staff who noticed the damaged truss last Thursday and raised the alarm, which given the strong winds forecast resulted in Council taking the precaution of closing the Centre.”
Cr Stone thanked patrons of the Collingwood Leisure Centre for their patience and understanding. She said extra aquatic activities and crèche sessions would be added to the Fitzroy and Richmond Leisure Centre programs to help accommodate extra demand from patrons happy to relocate temporarily to those centres.
The Centre’s members were also being advised they could request to have their membership suspended above the normal 62-day suspension Yarra Leisure members are already entitled to.
Council would also accept requests in writing for refunds, which would be assessed against the Yarra Leisure refund policy.
Cr Stone said Council was looking forward to reopening the Centre and to pushing forward with the planned expansion, which would include the replacement of the entire roof structure, as well as increasing the size of the lap and the toddlers’ pools, establishing a new learn to swim pool and refurbishing the change rooms, spa and sauna areas.
