Media Release

Our Town turns the spotlight on Yarra’s treasures

Mayoral chains, furniture and fine art from the last 150 years will be on display in October when Yarra City Council opens its doors for the first time to the Council’s art and heritage collection.

Richmond and East Collingwood were made municipalities in 1855 and in 1858 the municipality of Fitzroy was created. Each city developed its own distinctive collection of artworks and artefacts.

Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said when the three municipalities amalgamated in 1994, the artworks and cultural artefacts from the three Councils were combined to create the foundation for the City of Yarra Art and Heritage Collection.

“The “Our Town” exhibition includes a large selection from the collection and it will give residents a sense of the history and identity of the area,” Cr Stone said.

“We will have on display some fascinating pieces including Richmond’s beautiful gold mayoral chain which features a hand-painted coat of arms made by Blashki and Sons in the mid 1800s,” she said.

“There are also lovely hand-crafted items of furniture, including the former City of Collingwood’s mayoral chair which also features in one of our most significant portraits.

“The portrait is a wonderful artwork by one of Australia’s best known artists, Tom Roberts, and is of one of our early civic leaders, Mayor H. Walker.”

Cr Stone said the collection was formed from donated pieces, competition winners and works purchased by the then Councils.

The collection’s artefacts include other heritage items such as World War Two air raid paddles, city maps and finely illustrated hand painted testimonials.

“This extensive collection covering more than 150 years of history provides a unique insight into how life has evolved in Yarra,” Cr Stone said.

Our Town – A showcase of selected works from the City of Yarra Art and Heritage Collection will be held from Friday 2 October (9am – 5pm) to Sunday 4 October (10am – 5pm) at Richmond Town Hall, 333 Bridge Road, Richmond.  Admission is free.
