The West Richmond community will enjoy more open space with the opening of Peppercorn Park in Waltham Place next month.
The park will be officially opened on Thursday 8 October, following Council’s decision to enter into a 10-year lease with the Richmond Uniting church for the 506m2 land.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the opening of Peppercorn Park was a significant milestone in Council’s commitment to create five new parks across Yarra by 2013.
“It is great that nearby residents, who mostly live in apartments and houses with little private open space, will have this open space in which they can socialise and relax,” Cr Stone said.
“This small community park will be an ideal place for residents to catch up with neighbours, family and friends for a picnic or BBQ on a warm Summer’s day,” she said.
Council has spent more than $50,000 upgrading Peppercorn Park, including introducing new seating, resurfacing the pathway and planting drought-tolerant grasses and shrubs. Six new trees have also been planted, including a peppercorn tree at the park’s entrance.
The church’s rainwater tank has also been connected to the park’s tank so that 11,000 litres of water can be collected to naturally irrigate the park.
“There have been problems in the past with the garden beds and grasses dying off, but we will now have access to more water and the park will also be part of Council’s regular maintenance program,” she said.
The local community is invited to celebrate the opening of Peppercorn Park with a free BBQ on Thursday 8 October, from 6pm - 7.30pm.
“We look forward to celebrating this unique addition to Yarra’s open space,” Cr Stone said.
