A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed and a mural unveiled today to celebrate the work of Neighbourhood Houses in Yarra.
The MOU formally acknowledges the partnership between Yarra City Council and nine local Neighbourhood Houses. It outlines the roles and responsibilities of each organisation and can be viewed at www.Yarracity.vic.gov.au/Community/Neighbourhood Houses/.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said that Neighbourhood Houses are an important part of the Yarra community.
“The Houses provide a place to meet, to learn and to connect with other members of the local community regardless of their educational or cultural background,” Cr Stone said.
“They embrace diversity, create networks and are the heart of our community,” she said.
“The MOU recognises the shared vision of Council and the Houses to connect with the community and provide equitable recreational, social, training and well-being opportunities,” she said.
The Neighbourhood Justice Centre’s Neighbourhood House Courtyard Mural was also unveiled. The Mural was created by local artists from Yarra’s nine Neighbourhood Houses.
With the theme of “Neighbourhoods and Justice”, the mural aims to build confidence in the justice system by increasing people’s understanding of services in the NJC with a focus on information for victims of crime.
Acting Director of the Neighbourhood Justice Centre (NJC) Fran Whitty said the NJC believes good law is about strong communities.
“We’re very interested in working in partnership with community organisations and this project created an opportunity for us to connect to members of the community who may not necessarily walk through our door,” Ms Whitty said.
“Having NJC staff participate in each workshop was a much more interesting way for people to talk about justice issues than the standard community information session or reading a brochure,” she said.
More than 90 people attended the MOU and mural launch at the Neighbourhood Justice Centre. Two local performers entertained with music. The mural can be viewed during business hours at the Neighbourhood Justice Centre, 241 Wellington Street, Collingwood.
