Main Yarra Trail’s $1.3 million upgrade to get underway next week
Work on upgrading one of Melbourne’s most popular cycling routes will begin next week, with Yarra City Council leading the project to upgrade the Main Yarra Trail.
From next Wednesday (4 November) work will start on replacing the trail’s deteriorating timber boardwalk near Swan Street, Richmond, with a recycled plastic decking.
This weekend, Council will put out for tender the remaining bulk of the $1.3 million works to upgrade the trail between Bridge Road and Gardiners Creek.
The Federal Government announced last week that it would match Council’s $639,000 contribution towards the upgrade through its Jobs Fund.
Areas of the 2.5 km section of the trail which are as narrow as 1.5 metres will be widened, and a new asphalt path providing access from the trail into Bridge Road will be created.
The equivalent of five full-time positions will be provided during the life of the project, with the tender process prioritising companies who seek to use the project to expand hours for apprentices.
Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said the upgrade flowed from Council’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions and congestion levels in Yarra.
“Parts of the Main Yarra Trail have been placed under considerable stress due to the popularity and growth of cycling in recent years,” Cr Stone said.
“If we are going to encourage our community to use sustainable forms of transport such as cycling, then it is essential we have the infrastructure in place to make them real alternatives to car travel,” she said.
“Whether commuting to work by bike, or riding for fun, getting out of the car and onto the bike is a sustainable way to stay healthy.”
Cr Stone said there would be some minor disruptions to cycling routes during the upgrade, but the end result would be a safer and more accessible path for all users.
The boardwalk where works are beginning next week will be closed until early December 2009, with signage directing cyclists around the works and onto the adjacent pedestrian footpath.
A contractor is expected to be appointed for the overall upgrade before the end of the year, with these works expected to get underway in February 2010 and take about five months to complete.
