With predictions of another hot summer on the way, Yarra City Council is urging residents, community groups and businesses to prepare their homes and buildings for the heat.
Yarra Mayor Cr Amanda Stone said recent forecasts of hotter and more frequent heatwaves meant that homes, offices and community facilities needed to be well equipped to handle hot conditions.
“Heatwaves pose a significant threat to the health of our community, especially older people, children and babies,” Cr Stone said.
“It is imperative that we keep our homes and buildings cool in extreme hot weather. Luckily, there are lots of ways to do this that don’t contribute to greenhouse gases or cost the earth,” she said.
Council has developed a list of inexpensive and energy-efficient tips to help keep homes and buildings cool this summer:
“There are many resources available to Yarra residents who wish to prepare their homes for summer, including Council’s Energy Saver program which offers draught proofing and insulation at a discounted cost.
“As well as following these tips, people are encouraged to be mindful of their own health by staying out of the heat as much as possible, drinking lots of water and assisting people who may struggle in hot weather.”
Council is holding two heatwave workshops to provide Yarra residents and managers of local community facilities with further information about preparing for summer.
The workshops will provide tips about energy efficient cooling and staying healthy in the heat. There will be presentations by Yarra City Council and Red Cross, and plenty of time for discussion and questions.
The workshops will be held on:
