More than 60 residents attended Yarra City Council’s World Environment Day celebrations last night to find out how to live lightly in Yarra.
Guest speaker Rob Gell discussed the importance of taking action immediately to stop climate change. He also talked about the importance of grass roots environmentalism and the links between community action and global impacts.
Mayor Cr Amanda Stone also spoke at the event and said it was clear local councils are making wide scale efforts to directly engage the community in sustainability programs.
“Local government should lead the way environmentally, help people to make changes regardless of economic or social circumstances and work collaboratively with our community and other levels of government,” Cr Stone said.
“Yarra City Council’s environmental programs range from helping people retrofit their home with energy saving technology to reducing dependence on cars to facilitating community action,” she said.
Cr Stone also announced the new Yarra Environment Awards to recognize environmental trail-blazers in the municipality.
The inaugural awards will be presented at next year’s World Environment Day celebrations. The categories will include:
Nominations will be invited in early 2010.
