Investment in facilities and services that foster community wellbeing is the hallmark of Council’s 2009-2010 budget, which was adopted on 29 June 2009.
Highlights of the budget include funding for the purchase of land for a permanent North Fitzroy library, the expansion of the Collingwood Leisure Centre and the establishment of a Yarra Energy Foundation.
About $3.6 million is proposed for major open space improvements, including an upgrade of the main Yarra Trail by constructing a new shared pathway between Gardiners Creek and Bridge Road, and the creation of wetlands at Edinburgh Gardens.
The budget balances investment in services and asset renewal with the need to keep rates at a reasonable level. Rate revenue has been increased by 4.5%, while total fees, charges and fines have increased by 4.9%.
Council will continue to provide eligible pensioners with a $100 rebate on their rates bill.
Council has also varied its payment options so ratepayers will be able to elect to pay off their rates in full each February (which effectively enables them to have 7.5 months ‘interest free’) or make 10 monthly instalments.
