Council Initiatives

The City of Yarra strives to improve not only travel options for the community but also options for staff that work for the City of Yarra. Council encourages its staff to use more sustainable forms of transport and has produced a supporting Staff Green Travel Plan.

Seminars

• Peak Oil, seminar 28 August 2006
• ‘Don’t reinvent the wheel’, international sustainable transport planning
  by Susie Strain (Metropolitan Transport Forum) and Chris Loader (Bus Association Victoria).
  Monday 16 October 2006.
  Council hosted a presentation from both Susie Strain of the Metropolitan Transport Forum and Chris Loader of the Bus Association of Victoria on lessons to be learnt from North America and Europe. 15 people learnt a great deal about the way that transport is treated in other parts of the world and participated in some excellent discussion afterwards.
• 'Sustainable Transport Best Practice from Around the World'
  with Professor John Whitelegg.
  Thursday 19 October 2006.
  The City of Yarra in conjunction with the Victorian Sustainable Transport Interest Group hosted Professor John Whitelegg’s presentation. Over 50 people attended the seminar and learnt a great deal about best practice from around the world.
• ‘The Power of Community – How Cuba Survived Peak Oil’
  Monday 30 October 2006.
  Council held a free screening of the excellent film which over 25 people attended. An open forum discussion was held at the conclusion of the film. The film was kindly supplied to council through local resident Glenda Lindsay.
• ‘End of Suburbia’ - Oil Depletion and the Collapse of The American Dream

  Monday 20 November 2006.
  Council showed the film which discusses the consequences of inaction on Peak Oil and Global Warming. How will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia? An interesting and lively discussion followed the screening.
• Climate Change, Despair and Empowerment
  With John Seed
  Wednesday February 7 2007

John Seed informed the community about the effects to expect from climate change and how we can act to now to make a difference. Over 270 people attended the session and a lively discussion of what can be done at a local level followed the presentation.

• Sustainable Cities
  With Gordon Price
  Wednesday February 21 2007

Over 90 people attended a seminar given by Gordon Price, who writes, teaches and consults on urban development and planning, discussed the lessons learnt from Vancouver (awarded the world's most liveable city in 2006) and Canada, where Mayors and Councils increasingly accept density and mixed-use development - so long as it gives their municipalities a sense of place, more housing choice and a guarantee of improved transit. He also explored how the lessons learned are being adopted by suburban communities and he speculated on how climate change is affecting the willingness to accept change.
