The library aims to provide a broad range of books, materials & services for all sections of the community including those from Non-English speaking backgrounds.
Collections in Languages Other Than English are held at various branches but can be reserved and picked up from any location.
We offer the following services and collections in Chinese, Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, Somali and French. Bi-Lingual Picture books are available at Carlton, Collingwood, Fitzroy and Richmond
Searching for information on the internet in a range of languages is possible through the My Language .gov.au site.
Chinese
A Chinese speaking member of staff is available to assist library patrons at the following times and locations.
- Wednesday: Richmond 10am -1pm
- Thursday: Fitzroy 10am-1pm
- Friday: Carlton 1pm-3.30pm

Chinese collections, including books, audiotapes, kits, videos, CDs, newspapers and magazines are located at: Carlton, Collingwood,Fitzroy and Richmond.
Vietnamese
A Vietnamese speaking member of staff is available to assist library patrons at the following times and locations:
- Tuesday: Fitzroy 3.30pm-6pm
- Friday :Collingwood 3.30pm-6pm

Greek
Greek collections including books, audiotapes & kits, videos, CDs, newspapers and magazines are located at: Collingwood and Richmond.
Italian
Italian collections including books, audiotapes & kits, videos, CDs, newspapers and magazines are located at: Carlton, Collingwood, North Fitzroy and Richmond.

Spanish
Spanish collections including books, audiotapes & kits, videos, CDs, talking books, newspapers and magazines are located at: Collingwood, and Richmond.
Turkish
Turkish collections including books, audiotapes & kits, videos, CDs, newspapers and magazines are located at: Collingwood and Richmond.
Arabic
Arabic collections including books, audiotapes & kits, CDs, and magazines are located at Carlton and Collingwood
An Arabic speaking member of staff is available to assist library patrons at Collingwood Library every Monday from 3pm- 6pm

Somali
A Somali collection has been established at Carlton Library.
