For those who have not ventured into the realm of Science Fiction and Fantasy before (or for those who have but want a refresher), except perhaps on the big screen or television, here is a journey through the classics and more recent works, to give a tantalising taste of the two genres. Fiction and non-fiction works, from Frank Herbert to J.K. Rowling are included. This booklist is by no means intended to be the be all and end all of such reading, just a representative sample. The Chronicles of Pern : first fall - Anne McCaffrey 1993Anne McCaffrey is a leading science fiction/fantasy writer - her dragon series remains ever popular today. In this series she recounts the history of the fantasy world of Pern, and the cultural evolution of its people.
Do androids dream of electric sheep? - Philip K. Dick 1968The novel which became Blade Runner. A classic written by a prolific and brilliant science fiction writer. In a futuristic world "blade runners" hunt down and "retire" illegal and dangerous replicants who are on the run.
Dune - Frank Herbert 1965The first volume in the Dune series. A science fiction classic set on a harsh desert world populated by rampaging worm monsters and warring human factions wishing to control the valuable "spice" and barely existent water supplies.
The Forest House - Marion Zimmer Bradley 1993Enter the magical time of early Britain, a period when the ordinary people, Druids and priestesses resist the Romans who have invaded their country.
