Recommended Reading

Alice Pung recommends...

Angela Pippos

Her Top 5 favourite books

  1. A patch of blue - Elizabeth Kata
The innocence in this book is incredible.
  2. How Proust can change your life - Alain De Botton
This is a erudite, learned and quirky book; and after reading it you can convince people that you are erudite and learned yourself because De Botton can use a single sentence to summarize Madame Bovary, or three adjectives to describe melancholy philosophy.
  3. A long way down - Nick Hornby
Nick Hornby writes about falling down in a way that is true and funny and ultimately uplifting.
  4. A solitary blue - Cynthia Voight
As an adolescent, I liked the slow sad boy in the book.
  5. The woman warrior - Maxine Hong-Kingston
She writes powerfully of a childhood spent amongst 'ghosts'.
