The long quest to secure a permanent site for a North Fitzroy Library is progressing, with Council pushing ahead with the compulsory acquisition of land.
Council intends to compulsorily acquire the 900m2 land at 182-186 St Georges Road, which is large enough to house a community hub including a library, maternal and child health centre, multicultural citizens centre and a community meeting space.
Council will provide the owner of the land being acquired with appropriate compensation.
For Council to proceed with the compulsory acquisition, the land must first be reserved as a Public Acquisition Overlay in the Yarra Planning Scheme.
At its meeting on 20 October 2009, Council resolved to seek authorisation from the State Minister for Planning to prepare and exhibit Amendment C126 to the Yarra Planning Scheme, which proposes to apply a Public Acquisition Overlay over the land.
Here is the report
which Council adopted at that meeting
Once authorisation has been given, Council will put the amendment on public exhibition, and provide 28 days for interested people to make submissions.
Council will consider any submissions received and decide whether to adopt the amendment at a Council meeting in early 2010.
Further updates will be provided on this page as soon as details become available.
