Burnley Golf Course is not the sort of golf course to take lightly. Although it may look like a dinky little par 3 city golf course set amongst the picturesque gums of the Yarra River, the small upside down saucers we call golf greens will be tearing your hair out not too mention the sloping fairways that will influence your ball’s flight toward the trees.
Read on and discover some secrets to shooting your best ever score for 9 holes.
1st Par 4
268/284 metres

A nice looking starting hole with a narrow landing area off the tee. Load up from the left hand side of the tee with your target being the tower in the distance. This will help your shot land on the right hand side of the fairway for a better look at the green (and to avoid playing your second shot from behind a high fence). A large undulating green awaits your 2nd shot with plenty of lovely couch surrounding the green if you miss it.
2nd Par 4
253/255 metres

Decisions… decisions…do you pull out driver and run the risk of scaring the living daylights out of commuters of the 9.48am Melbourne bound train or lay-up with your 4 iron for a lazy par? Either way, aim down the left hand side to allow for the left to right slope. Try and avoid the pine trees lacing the right hand edge of the fairway. A nice drive will set up a half wedge to a fair green to set up your birdie. Take note of your yardage because looks can be deceiving and watch out for the sneaky bunker trap behind the green if you’re too long.
3rd Par 4
315/323 metres

Finally, a hole where you can “let the big dog eat!” Pull out your driver and lash out down this nicely shaped par 4 as you here the semi trailers speed down the M1. A strong drive right down the middle will set up a mid to short iron to the green. But this is where you need to get serious about Burnley Golf Course. This gruelling 3rd green has brought many a trainee pro to their knees. Avoid the trap on the left (you’ll have a tough up and down regardless of the pin location) and your second shot needs to stay below the hole on a chip or a putt otherwise you’ll end up in tears and throwing your putter at a passing cyclist!
4th Par 4
305/313 metres

A lovely par 4 with a new tee coming soon. A nice little draw off the tee will keep you away from the big gum on the left and set you up to come into the green from the left hand side. Unless you have a wedge in your hand, don’t get sucked in to a pin that’s located on the right hand side of the green. Hitting the slope on the right hand side will mean a missed green and a very difficult up and down to save par.
5th Par 4
280/288 metres

Grip it and rip it! Set up on the right hand side of the tee here to encourage a nice draw down this fairway. There is loads of room to the right of this so don’t be afraid to have a go. Your second shot to this elevated green is going to be difficult whether you have a 5 iron or a wedge! The nice fluffy grass left of the green can set up a very impressive Phil Mickelson flop shot if you want to impress your mates. Stay away from the right hand side trap, the lip is pretty huge…
6th Par 3
114/117 metres

This hole might not look like much, but a missed que or wrong club selection will put you over the green, down the slope, over the bike track, through the freeway and into the river! Take note of wind direction because prevailing winds will be a stiff southerly giving you a tough head wind or a cracking northerly with a difficult to judge tail wind. A good tip here is to aim for a window or a chimney on the house that’s on the hill in the distance. Imagine your ball sailing on line to your destination…
7th Par 4/3
216/218 metres

The seventh is a short par 4 for the ladies and a monster par 3 for the men. Don’t get overly keen because a bad fast swing off a slightly elevated tee will see you duck hook it over the fence. A smooth solid swing can get you pretty close to the green for a chip and a putt. A relatively flat looking green with a tendency to fall towards the river.
8th Par 4
218/220 metres

Many a player’s favourite hole. This visually appealing 8th hole forces you to thread your way between the left hand side fairway bunker and the big old gum on the right. Too far to the right and you’ll be stuck behind this impressive tree with not a lot of options. The more experienced player will fade a little drive over the trap for a softer landing into the green. Have a good look at the swales on this green walking up to it and you might just save yourself a shot or two.
9th Par 3
174/182 metres

The last chapter at Burnley is a tough longish par 3. With two menacing fairway bunkers between you and the green a solid shot off the tee needs to fly these baby’s to stay out of trouble. A solid utility club off this tee should do the trick. Another tough little green, watch out for the mean slope from right to left, again towards the river.
