Overview:

Yarra City Council recently engaged the services of an environmental science company, HLA Envirosciences, to undertake investigation into soil, groundwater and potential surface water contamination at the Collingwood Depot site (corner of Roseneath Street and Gray Streets, Clifton Hill) in response to EPA legislation.

Preliminary results indicated that there are contaminants at the depot site under the surface in the soil and in the ground water due to fuel leakage from underground storage tanks. Advice to hand indicates that there are no immediate health risks associated with the contamination.

Further tests were arranged to better determine the exact nature and extent of the contamination so that a remediation plan could be put into action.

More boreholes have now been drilled and monitoring wells installed in the depot site, Roseneath Street and along the banks of the Creek. Test results have provided information on the extent of the contamination and the results were presented to a public meeting. The leaked fuel is basically within the depot site and partially in Roseneath Street and is sitting approximately 9 meters below the surface.

Removal of the free floating fuel from under the fuel tanks has commenced.

Remediation options have been developed based on the further testing and the removal of the free floating fuel is the first step in the process. Removal of the tanks will commence once a number of issues have been sorted out.
