VBA to audit multi-storey buildings in Yarra
15 March 2016
Following a request from Council, the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) will be undertaking and audit of multi-storey buildings in Yarra.
The VBA will then notify Council of any potential non-compliant buildings and Council’s Municipal Building Surveyor will investigate the matters and ensure the buildings are brought into compliance.
At this stage there is no evidence to suggest that these buildings are unsafe for occupancy and it is anticipated that some remediation work may be required. Council’s records indicate that around 109 buildings may need to be audited, and the owners of each building will receive notification before this occurs.
The audit is being undertaken as a result of Metropolitan Fire Brigade investigation which identified that non-compliant cladding contributed to the spread of a fire at a Docklands apartment block.
Council this week resolved to receive a further report following the VBA audit. The resolution also called for a letter to be written to the VBA seeking an explanation of why the non-compliant cladding wasn’t detected earlier and how it intends to rectify this issue.
