Vale Mike Hill
9 August 2016
Yarra Council would like to formally acknowledge the passing of Mike Hill, former founding member and CEO of the Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA).
Mike passed away on Tuesday 26 July 2016. Council expresses its deepest condolences to his partner Lorna, to his extended family and pays tribute to his community service.
Mike Hill was Mayor of the former City of Brunswick in the early 1990s and – following amalgamation – was the first Mayor of Moreland City Council. Mike worked tirelessly to provide a voice for a range of communities and those less fortunate.
A passionate public transport advocate, Mike also helped save the Upfield railway line from closure. He was dedicated to working for the community regarding sustainability – setting up WestWyck as a sustainable village with 30 residences. It was the first development endorsed by One Planet Living.
Additionally, Mike had a 43 year association with Environment Victoria. He was also chair of Keep Australia Beautiful Council of Victoria, chair of ECO-Buy and was on the board of Sustainability Victoria. He will be greatly missed.
