New Abbotsford park proceeds to design phase
18 February 2016
Council has voted unanimously to develop a draft concept design for a permanent ‘pocket park’ on Mollison Street (at the corner of Charles Street) in Abbotsford.
Council has also resolved to seek community input prior to finalising the design as part of the 2016/17 budget process.
The decision to proceed to the design phase follows the installation of a trial park at the same location in November 2015. Council engaged extensively with the local community with on-site workshops, online discussions and one-on-one consultations, and the valuable feedback gathered will inform development of the draft concept design.
Since 2009 Council has created five ‘pocket parks’ to boost the social and environmental health of neighbourhoods with limited access to open space. These urban oases in the heart of the busy inner-city enhance health and wellbeing, collect stormwater, improve biodiversity, create shade and alleviate the urban heat island effect.
Council’s program of converting roads and other disused spaces in to parks has been recognised with awards from Parks and Leisure Australia (National Award for Open Space Planning) and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (Victorian Award of Excellence, Planning Category).
