East West homes to help homeless
8 September 2015
Yarra City Council welcomes the State Government's announcement yesterday (6 September) that 20 homes compulsorily acquired for the East West Link project will now provide housing for homeless people.
Acting Mayor Geoff Barbour said that Council had passed a motion at its 1 September meeting calling on the State Government to transfer these homes to public housing stock due to the huge shortage of public housing and emergency accommodation in Yarra and beyond.
"An increase in public housing stock would assist many homeless people into safe shelter, acknowledge their rights under the Victorian Charter of Human Rights, and see them treated respectfully rather than marginalised," Cr Barbour said.
The Council motion also noted: "with disappointment that the bulk of Yarra residents who had their homes acquired for the East-West Link have decided not to take up the offer to have their properties returned."
