The former home of the Collingwood Football Club, Victoria Park has been transformed into a major community recreation space.

At least $7.2 million was spent on the redevelopment, with the Australian Government committing $3.5 million and Yarra Council spending at least $3.7 million on the redevelopment over several years. Here is a May 2010 media release about the project.

The revitalised ground was relaunched at a community event on Sunday 4 December 2011.

Collingwood Football Club VFL games

In 2009, Council gave the Collingwood Football Club (CFC) permission to play its VFL home games at Victoria Park. Permission was given for the VFL team to play nine games per year at Victoria Park in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

In March 2012, Council was advised by the Collingwood Football Club that there is no longer a requirement for its VFL games at Victoria Park to be fully enclosed. This follows discussions between the CFC and the Victorian Football League.

There is no requirement for Collingwood to erect temporary fencing around the stadium or to charge for entry. This means residents from across Yarra are able to attend all games for free.

Previously, Council and the CFC had provided free season passes for the Collingwood VFL home games to residents who live near Victoria Park. These passes were not distributed this year as residents are now able to attend for free whenever they wish.

VFL decides against holding finals at Victoria Park

AFL Victoria has decided against holding VFL finals at Victoria Park this September.

The AFL had asked for Council's permission to hold the finals at the refurbished Abbotsford ground over three weekends this September.

At its 3 July 2012 meeting, Council agreed to the request provided several conditions were met. The conditions included that community access to the ground be made available two hours after the conclusion of each finals match.

As the VFL charges admission fees for its finals, 1800mm temporary fencing would have been placed around the park for the duration of the finals period. Council's conditional approval would have required the dismantling of fencing at entrances to the ground two hours after matches ended.

Council had also decided to look into the feasibility of signs being placed around the ground to promote the community campaign for trains not tollroads.

In mid-July 2012, the AFL advised Council that it had decided not to hold this year's VFL finals at Victoria Park. The organisation gave several reasons for its decision, including the proposed political signage and the costs associated with the fencing.
