In Your Patch: Local Sustainability in Action

In 2015, Council worked directly with six groups as part of a brand new program that aimed to build community connections and capacity and benefit Yarra’s environment.

This was one of the key actions coming from the Yarra Environment Strategy 2013-2017, aiming to support “an empowered community that acts locally to increase the sustainability of consumption and lifestyles to reduce its ecological footprint”.

The expression of interest process for this program closed in late 2014 after a fantastic response and more than twenty applications from groups in Yarra. Six community projects were selected:

  • Alphington Community Centre – compost hub and borrowable sustainability suitcase.
  • Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre – sustainability social enterprise hub.
  • Melbourne Farmers Markets – sustainable food hub in the Abbotsford Convent/Collingwood Children’s Farm precinct.
  • Solar Neighbourhoods – small-scale solar bulk buys in Yarra streets.
  • Yarra Community Housing – community gardens for social housing residents.
  • Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS) – kitchen garden and compost project.

The six groups worked with Council and have achieved some fantastic results. You can read out more about the six projects in this snapshot of the highlights of In Your Patch here:
