Yarra - 2011 Sustainable City of the Year
In July 2011, Yarra was named Victorian Sustainable City of the Year in Keep Australia Beautiful's annual awards.
Yarra was awarded top prize for a range of community-based initiatives and projects that promote sustainability.
One of those initiatives, the Yarra Neighbourhood Orchard, also won the Community Action category of the awards.
Run by not-for-profit organisation Cultivating Community with Council’s support, Yarra Neighbourhood Orchard promotes community gardening, monthly food swaps, and sustainable food production.
Here is a media release issued by Council about the award.
More information about the awards is available on Keep Australia Beautiful's website and Sustainability Victoria's website.
Council was recognised for its coordination and administrative support of the Yarra projects and groups named as winners and finalists at the awards.
Council would like to thank all of the community group members, businesses and residents who have had a role, and continue to be involved, in delivering projects and initiatives that promote sustainability.
The following Council-supported projects and organisations were named as finalists in the 2011 awards, and contributed towards Yarra being named Sustainable City of the Year:
