Yarra City Council, with the support of Melbourne Water, has developed an important set of guidelines designed to protect the environment and reduce water usage across the municipality.
These guidelines focus on achieving a cleaner environment and reduced water usage through innovative design.
Council is already implementing the Water Sensitive Urban Design Guidelines for projects in local parks and streets. A good example of this is the project at the Walker Street wetlands.
At this site, Council planted vegetation on an embankment to filter surface water which will reduce the amount of litter and unwanted nutrients flowing into the wetland and adjoining waterways.
Water sensitive design treatments have also been introduced in Kerr and Napier Street, Fitzroy and plans are in place to incorporate the guidelines into future ecological projects for Edinburgh Gardens.
Council’s long-term aim is to see these guidelines applied to all local projects, including new property developments.
