Future use for the Gardener’s Shed in Hall Reserve, Clifton Hill
Council invites local residents and users of Hall Reserve in Clifton Hill to provide input on possible future uses for the Gardener’s Shed in the reserve.
The small, derelict bluestone shed was identified for demolition as part of an ongoing program to remove redundant buildings from parks and reserves within the City of Yarra to open up more green space for residents to enjoy. A heritage study has indicated that the shed has no heritage significance.
Have your say
As an alternative the shed may be able to be renovated, so Council is offering interested residents an opportunity to put forward ideas and develop possible options for its future use without expanding into the park space.
Two community consultation sessions are being planned for people to provide input. These sessions will be conducted by Council officers and Linda Mickleborough of Lovell Chen, architects and heritage consultants.
Friday 17 April at 5pm at the intersection of Spensley Street and The Esplanade, Clifton Hill
Tuesday 21 April at 11am, Meeting Room 1, Richmond Town Hall, 333 Bridge Road, Richmond
The shed was built in 1937 and was used as a gardener’s shed to store tools. Heritage advice suggests it was possibly built by ‘susso’ workers, but that it is not a significant example of ‘susso’ infrastructure. ‘Susso’ is an abbreviation of ‘sustenance’ and was a form of welfare payment in the 1930s that engaged unemployed men to work on civic projects, including suburban parks.
The shed has been unused for many years and there are some safety and structural issues. Its small three metre by four metre size limits what it can be used for and it cannot be expanded into the park space.
Council put plans to demolish the shed on hold to consult with the community on what purpose the shed would best serve in the future.
