What is the Yarra Environment Strategy?
Throughout 2013, Council worked on a new Yarra Environment Strategy (YES), the fourth for the organisation.
Council uses the YES to set the direction for increasing environmental sustainability in Yarra.
Council undertook significant consultation to gather input from the community about what should be included in the updated YES.
The 2013-17 YES has defined a new vision for the City of Yarra which is:
“Yarra is a city where current and future populations enjoy a high quality of life within our fair share of the earth's resources”.
The strategy is structured around four pathways, each with their own vision, objectives, actions and indicators of success.
The pathways are:
- Community Empowerment and Local Action – An empowered community that acts locally to increase sustainable outcomes.
- Urban Ecology and Natural Environment - A city where natural and human-made environments co-exist harmoniously.
- Sustainable City Infrastructure and Lifestyles - Secure, affordable and liveable city infrastructure and lifestyles for the Yarra community.
- Sustainable Council Operations - Council operates as a model of environmental sustainability.
How can we be better?
The Yarra community has a proud history of environmental pragmatism and has demonstrated it is ready to meet the challenges of creating a more sustainable place to live, reaching impressive milestones along the way.
However, the complexity and challenges of climate change, protecting open space, dealing with waste and other environmental issues is growing. We need to find ways to share knowledge more widely and effectively, and to refine and expand efforts to make changes now and for the future.
