A Richmond resident and publican for more than one decade, Dale Smedley was elected as a Councillor for the first time at Yarra’s November 2008 elections.
Cr Smedley – a representative of Melba Ward which takes in Richmond, Burnley and Cremorne - helped run his family’s appliance shop in Bridge Road for 20 years before establishing his pub in the mid-1990s.
With his customer service background, Cr Smedley wants to help improve Council’s responsiveness to its residents and local traders.
“My main aim is to bring Council and our community closer together,” Cr Smedley said.
“Sometimes issues can become bigger than what they need to be because they are not addressed as promptly as they could be, or people feel like they are not being heard,” he said.
“I want to play a role in breaking down any divides – I don’t see any need for vitriol in any of our community debates.”
Overseeing Yarra Council’s $113 million annual budget brought with it great responsibility but also fantastic opportunities, he said.
“Talking to local people all the time, I have learnt about how much they care about basic Council services – such as garbage collection, fixing local traffic and parking problems and planning permits.
“I want to help build our civic pride with down-to-earth projects such as annual awards for the most beautiful local street.
“There should be more celebration about the City of Yarra being a great place to live -
we have so many diverse communities living on top of each other, but each with their own space.”
Cr Smedley is a member of Council’s Finance and Human Services Committee, Business Advisory Group, Yarra Arts Advisory Committee and the Collingwood Children’s Farm Management Committee.
